Does Every Picture Tell a Story?

Fine Art Photography

I hear it often “every picture tells a story”. Well, does every picture tell a story?

Photographers are often told that a story or description should accompany every photograph to help viewers connect with their image. This may be true for journalists, but is it also true for fine art photography? While viewers may be interested in certain details and specific locations, I don’t agree that it is necessary to provide a story for every photograph.

My goal is simple. I photograph things in nature which convey to me a sense of peace, beauty, or wonder. The images come from my heart. Some of them have stories but most do not. They merely capture a special moment in time. Hopefully they are moments that others can relate to without an accompanying story.

I rely on my photographs to speak for themselves. For instance, I have sat in my bird blind or pulled my car near trees to capture photographs of birds. I’m not really doing anything except enjoying the peace of nature and the company of wildlife, while they go about their daily routine. Every once in a while a bird will fly in close and look at me as if it had stopped to say “hello”. Aside from what camera settings I used, I’d be hard pressed to tell a story about that.

My ‘Conspicuous Bandit’ raccoon image is one of the few that does have a story because the female raccoon nested in a tree near our home. I was able to observe her poking her head out of this hole for weeks. She would only climb out once in a while to relieve herself, and then promptly return to her babies. There were days that were very hot and she looked uncomfortable hanging out of the tree. However, it was the look in her eyes that I relied upon to convey her story. If you are a parent you know what a daunting task it is to keep babies happy and fed. The story simply ends when I heard a clatter outside one night. I flipped on the light to find three baby raccoons raiding my bird feeder. They rushed across our driveway and climbed a telephone pole. Then proceeded to peek at me from behind the pole like animated Disney characters. I suppose they lived happily ever?

I admit I’m not an accomplished writer, it takes a great deal of time to gather my thoughts and write them all down. You’ll never find long explanations about how I created a photograph because there aren’t any. My nature photography is meant to convey what I have difficulty saying in words. The eyes are windows to the soul. I look for direct eye contact with animals, or postures which display human-like characteristics. I rely on my photographs to speak for themselves, but more importantly they speak for me. If my images weren’t doing that, then I would throw my camera away.

Snow White Tufted Titmouse Photo Art by Christina Rollo

Photo Art by Christina Rollo Snow White Tufted Titmouse

Snow White Tufted Titmouse – Beautiful Tufted Titmouse sitting on a snowy landscape. This photo is one of my favorite winter bird photos! I really enjoy watching and photographing these birds at this time of year.

The Tufted Titmouse is a small North American bird from the tit and chickadee family. They are gray on top and white underneath with an adorable face, and a cute crest of gray hair at the top of their head. They are common at bird feeders especially in winter when food is scarce.

Escaping the Blues

Escaping the Blues Weeping Tree Artwork by Christina Rollo

Escaping the Blues Weeping Tree Artwork by Christina Rollo – Why is it called ‘Escaping the Blues’? Because when the original photo was taken at a park in Michigan, it was during one of my walks under a bland grey sky in early spring. Even though the weather was gloomy I took my camera because I wanted to focus my attention on the beauty not the gloom. Art reflects life, sometimes we need to do this to escape our blues. Regardless of the weather or season I think trees are one of the most artistic things in nature to appreciate.

Nature Abstract Art

Colorful Abstract Series

Natural abstract art is unique and different according to changing weather conditions. In the fall when the leaves change colors, I look forward to photographing these colorful mosaic pattern nature abstracts.

Clear sparking water and wind mixes the reflection of fall foliage and creates a beautiful frosted glass effect. I never know what to expect, the colors and designs vary from day to day, and year to year.

Brilliant colors of fall foliage reflecting on the surface of the water create an interesting natural abstract pattern. When the wind blows, colors and patterns change making each of these abstracts beautiful and unique.

Watch for Patterns

Colorful waves of blue, green, and yellow come together in a beautiful natural flowing pattern. This image gives me a great sense of calm, just like the day I photographed it while relaxing by our pond.

All Seasons

This reflection of bright aspen trees on fresh water against a beautiful blue sky was photographed in spring instead of fall.

Mixing Colors

Some of these abstract photographs can be mixed and matched because the colors are similar, but no two are ever exactly alike. Much of the fun for me is inventing fruitful names for them, I call this one “Coral Confetti”.

Experimenting with Ideas

Here are a few ideas for making your own abstracts. Look for colorful reflections on any shiny surface, especially water. Watch for emerging patterns depending upon weather and time of day. Experiment, try manual and auto focus, as well as varying shutter speeds. Zoom in close on colors and patterns to isolate a variety of colors with minimal distractions.

If you have trouble seeing something interesting, consider creating a point of interest yourself. For this image I used a fast shutter speed while tossing a pebble in the water.

Endless Possibilities

The possibilities for creating colorful abstract art is endless. It’s fairly easy to do once you teach yourself to see unique photo opportunities. You might even consider photographing abstracts that are more recognizable, like this colorful tree reflection.

I hope you were inspired by theses colorful images. I look forward to seeing you create some wonderful and unique natural designs of your own!
